Featured in The Telegraph as the best romantic hotel in Norfolk, Cley Windmill combines the novelty and character of a beautiful early 18th Century windmill (in a fantastic North Norfolk coast location), with sensitively designed interiors and locally sourced produce for breakfast. Quite a package wouldn’t you say?
Accommodation is offered in two forms – Bed & Breakfast and Self-Catering.
The rooms inside the windmill itself are all unique in layout and feel, depending upon their situation within the mill. For example, the cosy and traditional Wheat Chamber (a beamed, circular room) is the first of the rooms in the tower, offering superb views across the river Glaven. The Miller’s Room was occupied by the last Miller and his Wife. The Stone Room features a dramatically high ceiling and a private doorway that offers access onto the balcony that encircles the windmill.
At the very top, the fabulous Wheel Room can only be accessed by a steep carpeted ladder, or can be taken along with the Stone Room to form a unique ‘suite for the adventurous’ at the very top of the windmill. The Stone is very popular with birdwatchers, so if you’re looking for some interesting sightings of an avocet or spoonbill, this could be the room for you!
The Long House and The Boat House offer B&B accommodation outside the mill itself. Ideal hideaways, they all offer the same fabulous fittings as the rooms inside the Mill.
Also external to the Mill itself, The Dovecote is a snug flint-walled cottage. It can sleep up to 4 adults on a Self-Catering basis and allows dogs.
Aside from the wonderful rooms, relaxation and comfort are provided via a magnificent circular sitting room (complete with inviting sofas, and roaring fire in winter) and a stunning beamed dining room for breakfast.
The restaurant at Cley Windmill is open once again. They serve wonderful set menus for £39 per person (£44 on steak nights) from Wednesday to Sunday. Diners get a truly unique experience within the Windmill, arriving from 7pm to enjoy drinks & canapes in the Windmill gardens, on the decking area, balcony or in the living room. Everyone is seated for 7:30pm to enjoy a feast from starter to dessert, all cooked by the brilliant William Alldis. During the winter months diners can finish the evening with a coffee or glass of wine in front of the fire in the round dining room or enjoy the stunning Norfolk sunset in front of the River Glaven.
Please note, menus are created a couple of weeks in advance, and there is always a vegetarian option for each dish. Diners are asked to inform of all dietary requirements in advance so they can alter the dishes accordingly. Tables must be booked at least 24 hours in advance.
The whole Mill can be hired on a self-Catering basis over Christmas and New Year.
Cley Windmill is licensed for civil ceremonies and weddings and the entire windmill can be occupied afterward for the wedding and reception. It is an unforgettable and stunning venue for a small romantic wedding (also more than perfect for the honeymoon!).
Tariffs begin at £79.50 pp pn (minimum 2 nights stay includes Friday and Saturday together), but book promptly as Cley Windmill’s rooms are in high demand. Single nights are available Sunday to Thursday.
