Today, Tuesday 6th May 2025, Will Watson will have been running his business in East Runton for 19 years.
East Runton, on the North Norfolk coast, is a lovely little village (once a fishing village) that now boasts an excellent shop, pub (Harry’s Bar), restaurant (The White Horse) and of course, Will’s Plaice Fish and Chip Shop, among other great businesses.
Will was a chef until May 6, 2006, when he took over the Fish and Chip Shop in East Runton. He had only £40 to his name at the time, but the landlord back then, Mr. Bernie Parkin, gave him a chance. After a few years, East Runton Fish and Chip shop became Will’s Plaice.
Will says “No two years are alike and every year is a challenge. It’s been a wonderful 19 years with many changes along the way. I now have a new landlord, Mr. Carl Stairs, who has given me a 15-year lease and understands the importance of security for my family and me”.
Mr. Stairs will be giving Will’s Plaice a full refurbishment this October and Will is very much looking forward to using the new equipment and to his future at Will’s Plaice.
Will went on to say “Navigating the ever-changing market dynamics can be demanding. A significant price surge as we’ve seen in recent times presents a considerable hurdle for consumers and businesses alike. Adapting to these shifts requires careful consideration and strategic planning. Everyone involved in the supply chain must work together to find solutions. In the last 6 months alone cod has increased in price by 55%. Last year it was potatoes that increased drastically. Hopefully, a balance can be restored before too long”.
Will continued “I feel very lucky to live and work in beautiful North Norfolk and this village in particular. Carl Stairs has invested in East Runton, making it an even better place for everyone. I would like to thank my lovely staff, customers both local and holiday makers (some come back year after year and it’s always good to see them). I’m also fortunate to have Maggie my wonderful wife who is and has been a real support over the last 10 years”
