Located 320 feet above beautiful sandy beaches between the seaside towns of Cromer and Overstrand and blessed with inspiring views out to sea, Royal Cromer Golf Club offers a suitable challenge to players of all abilities.
Formally opened in 1888, Cromer is one of only 18 Royal Clubs in England (there are only 37 in the entire British Isles). Founding members included the then Prince of Wales as Patron and numerous notable characters have graced the course throughout its history. These include Princesses, Prime Ministers and literary figures such as James Barrie, Alfred Lord Tennyson and Oscar Wilde.
Re-designed in 1891 by Tom Morris (who’s aim was to make Royal Cromer ‘the finest 9 hole golf course in the country’) and subsequently improved by JH Taylor, James Braid, and most recently Frank Pennick, today’s attractive and lovingly maintained 18 hole course is comprised of undulating, gorse-decorated sandy hills entwined with grassy valleys.
Royal Cromer is considered to be one of Norfolk’s finest golf courses. Wonderfully, despite this illustrious honour, and its aristocratic history, the club is renowned for its friendly atmosphere and extends a warm welcome to all visitors.
A Pro-Shop offers everything you could need for your round of golf, while Club Professional Lee Patterson is on hand for advice and private tuition.
Just prior to the original foundation of Royal Cromer, an observation about the North Norfolk Coast (and Cromer in particular) appeared in the London City Press in 1886: “More bracing air and delightful sands are not to be found in any part of England. …Cromer, which bids fair to become the most popular watering place, it being entirely free from objectionable features”. A reflection that still rings true today, surely some of the best golf to be had anywhere must be against this breathtaking natural backdrop on such a celebrated course?
